Mr J Brown

Mr Brown began his career in some of London's most challenging inner-city schools, the kind of environments where simply keeping students engaged is an achievement in itself. It was here he discovered something important: the biggest barrier to maths isn't always ability. It's belief.

Over seven years and thousands of classroom hours, he refined an approach that works from the inside out. Before tackling quadratic equations, he tackles self-doubt. Before teaching trigonometry, he builds trust. The result is students who don't just understand maths. They stop being afraid of it.

BrownTuition was founded to bring that classroom approach into a personal, one-to-one online setting, where every student gets the time, patience and tailored support that is hard to give in a class of thirty.

Many of the students he has taught have additional needs, including dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, ADHD and autism. He breaks topics into smaller steps, uses visual methods and plenty of retrieval practice, and lets the pace follow the child rather than the syllabus. Children with additional needs are very welcome.

Demand outgrew one diary a while ago, so Mr Brown now works with a small team of associate tutors he has chosen and trained himself. Some are qualified teachers; others are university mathematicians and graduates who turned out to be unusually good at explaining things. All are DBS-checked, all are trained the same way, and Mr Brown sits in on their early sessions before they take on a family of their own.

"Many students who struggle with maths just need someone to sit with them and believe in them until they believe in themselves. I've seen it play out so many times.

I had a student in Year 5 who was struggling with her confidence and, as a result, she was not getting the grades she or her parents wanted. So my first job wasn't the maths at all. It was how she spoke about herself, and the language she used when she talked about her own work.

From there it was about reframing her mistakes as helpful to both of us. They help me know what she knows, and they help her know what she doesn't know yet, so we can use what she does know as building blocks to get to the rest."

Joshua has been tutoring my son (Y11) and daughter (Y8) for two years now and is doing an excellent job. They have very different abilities when it comes to maths, but he caters equally well to both. One is at the top end of class and Joshua provides stretching tuition; while the other finds maths hard, but loves sessions with Joshua and is flourishing. He has the patience of a saint! I would highly recommend Joshua to anyone.

How sessions actually work.

01
Diagnose the mindset first

Before any content, Mr Brown gets to know how the student thinks about maths. What triggers their anxiety? What do they believe about their own ability? This shapes everything.

02
Build on what they know

Sessions start from a foundation of success (what the student already understands) before extending into challenging areas. Confidence is built through repeated wins, not repeated failures.

03
Keep parents in the loop

Every month, parents receive a written update from Mr Brown: what has been covered, how the student is responding, and what comes next. No mystery, no guesswork.
